Caves de Vinho do Porto
Gaia hosts dozens of wine lodges (caves) built from the 17th century onwards. Prominent houses include Taylor’s, Graham’s, Sandeman, Cálem and Kopke (the oldest, founded in 1638). Tours typically include:
- Cellar visits: Guides explain grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca), fermentation, fortification with aguardente and ageing in oak barrels or vats.
- Tastings: Compare ruby (aged in bulk for a fruitier style), tawny (aged in barrels with oxidative aromas of nuts and caramel), white port and vintage port (bottle-aged and coveted).
- Pairings: Port pairs well with cheeses, chocolate and nuts. Some lodges offer food pairings and rooftop restaurants overlooking Porto.
- Historic exhibits: Many caves house museums on the trade treaties that boosted exports, the technology of cooperage (barrel-making) and the lives of the merchants.
Wine Tourism Experiences
- Port wine masterclasses: Learn to identify aromas, understand ageing classifications and mix classic cocktails (e.g., Port Tonic).
- Blending workshops: Create your own tawny by mixing ports of different ages.
- Sunset tastings: Enjoy port cocktails on a terrace overlooking the Douro.
- Douro wine bar crawl: Combine visits to bars on Gaia’s riverfront with short boat rides.
